Yesterday I showed you a video about how wave energy is converted into electricity. Today we’ll have a quick look at the workings of tidal power. Both tidal as wave energy are gained by the power of our oceans and waters.

Belgium aims to get energy from the sea

Within two years Vlaanderen, a province of Belgium, will be able to get energy from waves near its shores. Currently there are plans to build a wave power station, according to Professor Julien De Rouck from the University of Gent. They are aiming to build a 5 meter wide buoy.

Tidal Energy in Scotland

ScottishPower is to build turbines in the Sound of Islay that will generate enough electricity for all the 3,500 inhabitants of the island and its famous distilleries. The 10MW tidal project is one of the world’s largest marine projects so far. The company expects the ten 30 meter underwater turbines to be operational in 2011, for an installation cost of around 50 million pound.

Britain gives more aid to coal than to wave power

The amount of British aid invested in marine energy is nothing compared to the aid coal gets from the British government. To be exact, the British government has spent 20 times more subsidizing the coal industry over the past six years than it has put into marine energy.
