U.S. Could Get 15% of Energy from Wave and Tidal Sources by 2030

According to two recent studies by the U.S. Department of Energy, wave, tidal and other water power sources could supply the U.S. with 15% of their power needs by 2030. The studies calculated the maximum kinetic energy in waves and tides which can be used for energy production.

Marine Renewables in the lift

Marine Renewable energy is one of the most reliable and predictable sources of renewable green energy. With technologies now proving their viability and plans for commercial deployment of projects now gathering momentum this industry is on the dawn of a new and very profitable era. In the UK, Tidal energy devices will soon to be deployed at multi megawatt scale, producing commercially viable ‘green’ electricity by 2015 predicts first minister Alex Salmond, marking a major breakthrough for the industry.

Atlantis Unveils The World’s Largest Tidal Turbine: The AK1000

Atlantis Resources Corporation (“Atlantis”), one of the world’s leading developers of electricity-generating tidal current turbines, unveiled the largest and most powerful tidal power turbine ever built, the AK1000™, yesterday at Invergordon, Scotland. The AK1000™ is due for installation at a dedicated berth at the European Marine Energy Centre (“EMEC”), located in Orkney, Scotland later this summer.

Deep Green Technology, underwater kites

Minesto is developing so called ‘Deep Green’ technology or underwater kites which are tethered to the ocean floor. These underwater kites could produce continuous energy from tidal flows. According to the company a single Deep Green turbine could produce up to 500 KW of electricity. And because tides are much more regular than winds, the energy produced would be less variable.

Turning Dutch Coastal Dikes into power generators

Plans are underway to turn the famous Dutch dikes into tidal power generators. The dikes were originally built to protect the people and low lands of the Netherlands, but now a committee of various government representatives is looking into the possibility to create a more pleasant and more natural land behind the dikes, and a way of generating power.
