France has started with two projects that will over shadow many other European utility-scale solar projects. These projects will span a joint surface area of 89 acres and will generate up to 18.2MW of solar electricity.
I’m talking about two solar farms in Les Mées, France. These solar farms are part of a bigger design in the region that will cover over 200 hectares with solar panels, with a total output of around 100MW by the end of this year.
The project was implemented without the use of concrete foundations, and was specifically designed to still allow grazing by sheep. This way other resources will not be wasted.
According to the projects’creators the solar power stations were installed on the Puimichel plateau because this is one of the most favourable areas of France for solar exposure. The solar exposure reaches a yield of 1,556 kWh/m2 annually. And because of the altitude (800 metres) ventilation will be ideal, which in turn guarantees an optimal output of 10 to 15% above average.
