IKEA to expand US Solar Investment to 75% of stores

IKEA has a goal to run on 100% renewable energy. In the U.S. the furniture chain had already begun expanding its solar installations in California and the East Coast. IKEA recently announced that it will be installing solar on all IKEA stores in the Southern U.S. This commitment means a full 75% of US IKEA stores will now feature solar installations.

Apple to build solar farm to power their data center

Last week Apple applied for a permit to build a 171 acre solar farm near their data center in North Carolina. While the company won’t come forward with any official information about the solar farm, the media has been critical about the data center that currently runs on coal.

One of the major problems with wind power is that it isn’t reliable. The wind doesn’t always blow when electricity is needed. Next to that, electricity is hard to store. Canadian start-up Hydrostor takes could change that. It takes off-peak power from offshore wind turbines and uses it to pump up a big underwater balloon.

In the last 6 months installation cost of solar dropped with 11%. More and more corporations are picking up the solar adventure. Walgreens made headline back in 2006 for its commitment to solar, and has continued that commitment in 2011.

Office Depot changes boxes with bags to save Trees

Office Depot wants to save 20,000 trees or 3.5 million pounds of wood-based resources by offering to deliver orders in paper bags instead of boxes. This will also eliminate the use of plastic ‘air-pillows’.
